I teach people how to breathe. Out of every 10 people that have come through my doors, about nine don’t breathe correctly, including those that practice yoga. While yoga tells you to coordinate your breath with your movement, i.e. inhale up, exhale, down, there isn’t that much more instruction on it in a typical class.Â
Even when someone comes to me for life coaching, I go over the breath first. Because the quality of your breath determines the amount of effort you’ll need to put into everything else. Because it determines where your mind will go, and whether or not it will work with you.Â
Your narrative is impacted by your breath. And because your body believes what you think, and aligns to it, it impacts you at the cellular level. Which means your narrative has the power to promote or erode good health and sense of wellness.Â
Your busy-ness and fast-paced life makes you forget the things that are most important to you, and this gets reflected in your breath; it becomes erratic and shallow, which makes your thoughts erratic and shallow. Which makes you more stressed.
On the flip side, slowing down your breath is the way to slow down your life… is how you regulate your nervous system, conquer time, and become the happy kind of productive. You’ll begin to find the ease and joy in every moment. You’ll begin to experience time as just the right amount: no more, no less, no slower, no faster. You’ll begin to find your boundaries as well as your edge, and you’ll feel much better and relax.
It really does change everything because breath is life force and perspective.Â
Unfortunately, most people try to learn to breathe once they’re in deep stress. And when that overwhelm subsides, they dismiss the practice until the overwhelm happens again. This doesn’t change things. When a fire hose is applied to a burning house, it can stop the fire, yes, but the house is damaged, the extent to which how far the house was let to burn. The key is gaining professional level access to your breath by making this a part of your daily practice so you can prevent big fires from happening in the first place and use the heat from the small ones for transformation.Â
